Mapping for Natural Flood Management training course

Natural Flood Management (NFM) techniques are increasingly used to manage flood risk by restoring floodplain processes and increasing storage.

Quickly identifying historical floodplains and areas for reconnection can help prioritise NFM activities.

RRC are offering two training courses, requiring no prior knowledge of GIS, geomorphology or modelling. Aerial photo interpretation, GIS, fieldwork, lab work and geomorphology will be used to indicate historical floodplain boundaries, surface runoff pathways and demonstrate potential areas of flood storage. Output maps can be used to highlight priority areas for floodplain restoration and flood retention areas.

This course is ideal for anyone working in river restoration, conservation and flood defence, including river managers, rivers trusts, local authorities and government organisations.

Two one-day courses are run back-to-back:

Mapping Historical Floodplains using Hydrogeomorphological Survey

Attendees will be introduced to the Hydrogeomorphological cartographic method (HGM) in order to map historical floodplain boundaries and recognise floodplain restoration areas. The principles of the method will be outlined in a few presentations before attendees have a go at identifying flood boundaries with a contour map. In the afternoon a site visit will be used to explain how the boundaries can be verified in the field.

Mapping Surface Runoff and Flood Storage Opportunities for NFM

Attendees will process LiDAR data using a free GIS tool to identify runoff pathways and flood storage areas. This will be complemented by presentations by experts that have been using the method for many years. A site visit will verify the storage areas and pathways identified in the classroom.
